UK Novel Food Status of Human Placenta
The novel food classification of human placenta is still pending by the Food Standards Agency since June 2014. We have raised over 6,000 signatures on our petition to the FSA to stop this action. As of November 2018, the FSA novel department put together a 'Placenta Project' team to review and decide on advice and guidance they will provide Environmental Health Officers at a local level. IPEN has been involved in discussions with the FSA Placenta Project and we have recently heard their final plans will be revealed within the next few weeks (April 2019).
At present, there are no novel food restrictions on the processing of human placenta for consumption by the mother.
Registering a Food Business with your Local Authority
IPEN's HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points) and Food Safety Management System detailing our food safety processes have been accepted by multiple UK local authorities. IPEN certified placenta specialists seeking food safety approval will likely succeed in their registration as long as the recommended documentation is meticulously prepared and organised and a clean working space meeting food safety guidelines is presented on inspection. Your designated food safety officer will assist you during your registration and offer guidance as to changes you may need to make to your premises. IPEN Instructors can also offer some guidance when registering with your local authority.
