Dear Placenta Enthusiasts,
WE ARE APPEALING FOR YOUR SUPPORT IN THIS VERY DIFFICULT TIME OF THREAT TO THE FUTURE OF RAW PLACENTA SERVICES IN THE UK.
Please read below to find out how you can help!
We would like to make you aware of a recent event which affects the human rights of mothers after birth and their choice to hire a placenta specialist to prepare their raw placenta remedies after birth.
On Monday 21 October 2013 Dacorum Borough Council’s Environmental Health Officer issued IPEN Ltd with an unexpected prohibition notice against the use of raw human placenta in the preparation of raw placenta smoothies and raw placenta capsules. IPEN was due in Magistrates Court today (23 October 2013), less than 48 hours after the summons. Thankfully our solicitor managed to adjourn the case for 14 days. The Environmental Health Officer who issued the prohibition notice is concerned the placenta will become contaminated by birth fluids and bacteria and therefore should not be consumed raw after birth.
How was this brought on? We are unsure. IPEN has been registered as a Food Business in Dacorum for over 3 years and has had regular audits from an environmental health officer ever since. Our last audit was in April 2013 and we were issued with a 4* food hygiene rating after this meeting. This prohibition notice was completely unexpected and delivered with no warning. More importantly it was NOT brought on by any report, incident or problem with our services. An Environmental Health Officer has a duty to protect the public of threats to their safety by regulating food business in the UK. They are concerned for the welfare of the public by allowing the consumption of raw placenta to continue.
IPEN clients have been drinking raw placenta smoothies for over 5 years and have been consuming raw placenta capsules for over 2 years. We have a large number of safe guarding measures in place to ensure food hygiene is of the highest importance and contamination risks are thoroughly managed during the time of placental birth and consumption of raw placenta. Many of us have consumed our own placentas raw after birth and we feel very passionately about the benefits associated with raw placenta consumption and safeguarding placentas to ensure mothers are safe to consume them.
As you may know from either first or second hand experience, raw placenta is highly beneficial for new mothers after birth. We believe raw placenta, packed full of rich stem cells and T cells, iron, birth hormones, proteins, anti-inflammatory properties, rich growth factors, vitamins and minerals is the perfect supplement for new mothers after birth. Our anecdotal research and testimonials are incredibly promising. 84% of mothers who drank raw placenta smoothies said their milk ‘came in’ in less than 48 hours after birth, and 60% said their bleeding stopped by week 3 after birth. (feedback from 539 mothers from 2012-2013) These statistics are very positive compared to mothers who do not drink raw placenta smoothies. Breastfeeding statistics are also incredibly high and most mothers were able to breastfeed easily with a rich milk supply and ability to express large amounts of milk for their babies. IPEN has not once received any report of negative side effects associated with raw placenta smoothies. In fact, the only side effects reported are positive and promising and suggest a very possible future of reduced post-natal illnesses if more and more women continue to consume their raw placenta after birth. Many of our clients have avoided blood transfusions after loosing litres of blood as a result of post-natal haemorrhage simply by drinking 1-2 raw placenta smoothies within hours of birth.
IPEN specialists have been continuously recommended by NHS midwives for over 3 years and we are supported by many large birth networks such as AIMS (Association of Improvements in Midwifery Services), IMUK (Independent Midwives UK), Doula UK, The Radical Midwives Association, Nursing and Midwifery Online and Birthlight.
But Dacorum Borough Council believes new mothers are at risk. They believe new mothers should not have the right to hire a trained and certified placenta specialist to prepare their raw placenta smoothie. They believe they are acting on behalf of mothers to protect them from their own placentas.
IPEN has been summoned to West Herts Magistrates Court on 5th November in defence of this prohibition notice which threatens the future of raw placenta services in the UK. To clarify, if this ban is confirmed in court it will prohibit raw placenta preparation by a non household member in the borough of Dacorum only.
