We are still waiting for a response from the Food Standards Agency (FSA) as to their final decision on the novel food status of human placenta. I had a conversation with a communications officer at the FSA today which confirmed that all placenta specialists in the UK, no matter their training or affiliation with any organisation, are under the same threat of regulation under the novel food classification as IPEN specialists.
We have also done some digging using our Freedom of Information Act rights and have discovered that, in fact, there was no such thing as a ‘Certificate of Intent’ released by Dacorum Borough Council. We were told by an Environmental Health Officer this ‘Certificate of Intent’ forces other boroughs in the UK to shut down IPEN placenta specialists based on the verdict of the court hearing. This claim was a misrepresentation of fact by one UK borough and used as an excuse to pervert normal procedures for inspecting food business operators.
This means that other Environmental Health Officers in other boroughs in the UK are still free to make independent decisions on the approval of placenta service providers in their local areas. It also means that placenta services in the UK are not illegal. We do sincerely apologise for any upset caused by our Facebook announcement that placenta services were made illegal in the UK. We were only responding to information that was confirmed to us by Environmental Health, which we now know to be inaccurate.
We are doing our very best to work with Environmental Health and the FSA in order to obtain some type of clarity of this very confusing situation.
We respect that many of our supporters are mothers, placenta specialists and birth care providers who are also waiting desperately for a response from the FSA. As soon as we know any further information, we will ensure you are up to date and informed. Thank you for your ongoing patience and support.
